4# Social Media: Helpful or Harmful?

Hey Friends,

It’s hard to believe that despite the life cycle of social media being only in its infancy, it has revolutionized our personal and professional lives so profoundly. Organizations have finally begun to recognize the importance of building a business platform that can seamlessly amalgamate the interests of employees and customers.  Companies are branching out via social media tools such as blogs, forums, viral videos, Facebook contests, etc. that allows customers to see the dynamic personalities driving corporate entities.

We live in an age of rapid change.Samsung,  Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and many other innovators have changed how we work, communicate and live. But is this a new industrial revolution?

Some twenty years ago, a large bookstore might have had 100,000 books available. Today online retailers (e.g., Amazon) have millions of books to sell. Similarly, there were no smartphones two decades ago--just simple mobile phones and land lines. Social media then consisted of email and listservs; now we have Facebook and Twitter. A 1990s personal computer had only basic capabilities like word processing, spreadsheets, and a few others, now a PC or an iMac has the power of an earlier generation's supercomputer.

Revolutionary? Well, it depends on what we mean by a revolutionary innovation.According to me: "An innovation is revolutionary if it so changes society that going back to the pre-innovation technology would be catastrophic." Consider the automobile, that wonderful innovations that took place generations ago, if all motor vehicles vanish tomorrow, the result would be catastrophic. If all phones (land lines and mobiles) suddenly stop working--the result would be disastrous for communication. Now, let's imagine that all social media disappear. Would the economy collapse? I don't think so. Or, if every online store in the world closed, would it be catastrophic? Probably not. Leaving aside these anecdotal examples, it's noteworthy that there isn't an obvious economic growth spike resulting from the internet era.

What comes under Social Media:

Advantages:

In this era of internet and social network/social media, one can easy earn money if he/she has the right talent and know when where to use it. Social big bang websites like YouTube, Blogger, Wordpress and many other are the best platform that one can get. It is a platform where you perform and the world is your audience. The recent and the most appropriate example that is coming in my mind right now is PSY's Gangnam Style, and immediate super hit that spread like a viral fever. With Google and many other organisation that are proving us with the services through which we can easily earn some cash.

Social networking site Twitter has now became the hottest social network site with most number of active members per hour (1.4 billion users), everything is shared and discussed here only. The latest announcements by government, sports club, big brands etc. takes place here, very sensitive informations and datas are leaked publicly on Twitter. It has become the voice of country-men. The social movement that started on Twitter and Facebook in Egypt has brought the revolution in their nation.

Facebook on the other hand has now slowed down as people spend a little less time on it, it has now become virtual world were people comes out of their house(online), interact with other peoples (chat), share pleasentaries (photos, videos, links etc) or just passes their time here and there (Facebook apps and games). Facebook is used by brands, communities, organisations and websites to either share their contents or to earn money.

Disadvantages:

With increase in popularity of social networking sites and other social websites, cyber crimes like cyber-bullying and hacking accounts are taking place. People are black-mailed over the the internet, among which maximum are teenagers between the age group of 13-19. Images of people uploaded on their social network profile are sometime misused which eventually turns out to be very harmful for their reputation and social image (don't get scared it doesn't happen not every time . Internet is filled with explicit contents (adult contents) which are also very harmful.

Final Words.

Social media will grow the same way as it is growing now, it we who have to be  careful of what information we are uploading as it can backfire on us. Avoid strangers on social networking sites, they are can be dangerous. Befriend only those people whom you friend with in the real world, unfriend or reject unwanted people at once. Social media is our future and we can't run away from it. So don't turn your back against it,  just play smart.
